Why I joined the Orange Order New Zealand: Wor. Sis. Gina Lindsay-Crawford - LOL15 Papatoetoe Auckland

I joined the Orange Order around 12 years ago, continuing a family tradition rooted in Northern Ireland, as both my parents were members. Regrettably, I didn't join until after my father's passing, which I deeply regret. However, I've had the pleasure of sharing my journey in the Order with my mother, who has proudly watched me progress through various positions, including becoming Worshipful Mistress of our Papatoetoe lodge and serving on the Grand Executive in the Grand Lodge.
Along with gaining a sense of belonging and following in my family's footsteps, I have made new friends and overcome my fear of public speaking. Before joining, I was quite apprehensive about speaking in public (which might surprise some people). However, having to speak up on the lodge floor and learn various charges has greatly improved my confidence in expressing my thoughts and opinions in a group setting.
The lodge has also provided me with opportunities to travel to Northern Ireland and explore my family's heritage. Attending Imperial Council meetings and connecting with our international members has been an incredible experience. I've met wonderful people in the Order outside of New Zealand, and we still keep in regular contact. The meetings range from informal catchups to more formal, traditional gatherings, involving learning various positions in the lodge and the accompanying floor work. Discussions on various topics of public interest and guest speakers from a range of charities who share their heartwarming stories of the good work they do in our communities is another aspect of our meetings and annual conferences.
I'm fortunate to have my husband in the lodge with me, making it a rewarding experience we share together.
