Our History

The Orange Order has a proud history in New Zealand, richly carved out over almost two centuries.  As part of the global Orange family that covers Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada, USA and Australia, we are proud to have New Zealand well represented in The Orange Order international network.

Orange Order Origins

In the 1680s, King James II's oppressive rule  led to widespread discontent. This prompted a group to seek help from William of Orange and in 1688 the first Orange Association was formed to support him.

History of our Lodges

Orange Order has had many Lodges in NZ over the years. Today, we continue to have nationwide coverage with Lodges in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Timaru and Invercargill.

Our Beginnings in NZ

The Orange Order was brought to New Zealand in the 1840's by emigrants from Ireland. Lodges were established across New Zealand, and The Grand Lodge of New Zealand was formed in 1908.

Benevolence

Benevolence, the desire to do good to others, and general charitableness, is at the very heart of the Orange Order NZ.  As a fraternal organisation, we are very proud of the valuable work we do in our communities.
