2026 Grand Lodge Conference Wellington

The 81st Session of the Grand Orange Lodge of New Zealand was proudly hosted by the Wellington District at the Copthorne Hotel over King's Birthday Weekend 2026.

The weekend began on Friday evening with a wonderful mix-and-mingle gathering, complete with delicious nibbles and plenty of fellowship as members renewed old friendships and welcomed one another for another memorable Grand Session.

A few hardy souls even took the opportunity to start their days with an early morning walk along the beautiful Wellington waterfront, making the most of the city's scenery.

Saturday was devoted to the important business of Grand Lodge, with delegates working together in the spirit of service and commitment that has always been the foundation of our Order.

On Saturday evening, members and guests gathered for a delightful dinner. Our guest speaker, Dr Rachel Perrett from the Malaghan Institute, shared fascinating insights into the Institute's groundbreaking research into cancer treatments and other diseases. Her presentation was both informative and inspiring, and we were pleased to present a cheque to support their valuable work.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation by the Most Worshipful Grand Master, Sister Sheryll Rodgers, of a Grand Lodge Meritorious Certificate and Jewel to Worshipful Brother John Hobbs of the Wellington District. This well-deserved recognition honoured John's many years of dedicated service, particularly in his role as District Master, and was warmly received by all present.

Worshipful Brother Bryan Smith of Invercargill was also honoured, receiving his 60-Year Service Certificate from the Grand Master. Reaching such a remarkable milestone is a testament to lifelong commitment and devotion to the principles of the Order.

The Grand Master was also delighted to present Bursary Certificates to several deserving young people pursuing their educational goals. Kirsty Doyle, who is studying for a Diploma in Real Estate, and Dylan Evett, who is training to become a Registered Nurse with aspirations of specialising in Mental Health, both received bursaries. Kirsty and Dylan are the children of Sister Karen Evett of the Wellington Lodge. Brother Sean Watts, a member of No. 2 Royal Albert Lodge in Auckland, was also recognised as he continues his studies in film and media.

Sunday morning saw members attend worship at the Kilbirnie Salvation Army Church, led by Seloni. As always, we received a warm and heartfelt welcome from the congregation. Following the service, members enjoyed a wonderful luncheon at The Pines, where a generous buffet was shared and many took the opportunity to visit the beautiful chapel on the grounds.

The fun continued on Sunday evening with our ever-popular quiz night. Laughter, friendly competition, and plenty of good humour ensured that everyone had an enjoyable time together.

On Monday morning, the Most Worshipful Grand Master presented a Bursary Certificate to Leah Storey, who is studying to become a Dietitian and Nutritionist. Leah is the youngest daughter of our Grand Treasurer, Brother Shane Storey, and we wish her every success in her studies and future career.

As the weekend drew to a close, members gathered one final time for lunch before beginning their journeys home to all corners of New Zealand. The 81st Session was marked by fellowship, service, recognition, and the celebration of our younger generation, leaving us with many happy memories and much to look forward to in the year ahead.
